The top challenges when managing contractors

Contractor management is not a simple task and is certainly not getting any easier with the onset of COVID-19. In November the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published their annual statistics, revealing that while fatalities fell in 2019/20, injuries at work increased a shocking 18% to 693,000.

In our whitepaper, Benchmarking Contractor Management, EHS managers suggested that fulfilling your duty of care when multiple contractors performing simultaneous operations on multiple sites is seen as the biggest challenge (41%), followed by lack of time and availability to audit work (23%).

Contractor management is about getting it right. If the contractors you hire don’t have a strong safety record, the right insurance, or strong risk management skills, they could end up costing your company a lot of money and worse, a fatality. Checking contractors based on safety performance helps you to fulfill your requirements and offers peace of mind that the contractor you choose has the knowledge and understanding required to manage risk, complete the job safely, and maintain a safe working environment.

Falls from a height, being struck by a moving vehicle and being struck by a moving, including flying or falling, object continue as the three main causes of fatal injury.

To overcome these challenges, companies need to build a more robust contactor management capability. Contracting work out does not mean you are contracting out responsibility for the risk.

Our new White Paper outlines the specific challenges and risks around contractor management, as well as exploring the tools and techniques to address these challenges.
