SSIP – more valuable than ever

SSIP (launched in 2009) is designed to make life easier for suppliers that have multiple certifications with different schemes, saving you time, money and duplication of effort – and freeing you to focus on running and growing your business.

SSIP registration matters because it’s a key indicator that your company can demonstrate high levels of health and safety management. It shows that you’re fully committed to best practice in the work environment, and that the required levels of protection for your staff and contractors are firmly in place.

This sector is now more regulated than ever. SSIP is the simple way to prove that your company takes this matter seriously. More than 450 major client organisations only use contractors and suppliers that have the SafeContractor SSIP. Other SSIPs are used by hundreds more. It’s very valuable.

What is the cost?

The cost is generally based on the size and risk profile of your business.

SSIP is recognised across many member schemes. That means there’s no need for contractors to repeat a full assessment process with each health and safety assessment scheme. It’s effectively one and done.

When your business is registered with SSIP, you’re eligible for ‘deem to satisfy’ registration with many other pre-qualification portals – a valuable source of real discounts.

What if we’re already SSIP accredited?

If you have an existing accreditation with another SSIP assessment scheme, that’s fine. It just has to be relevant to the work category you select for your SafeContractor accreditation.

For example, if you have been accredited as a handyman with another SSIP scheme, Alcumus SafeContractor can also accredit you as a handyman.

However, if you want to become accredited for a different or additional work category, you may need to provide more information. It depends on how different the new work category is.

The SSIP Member Requirements

SSIP promotes a minimum standard of health and safety assessment.

This standard – the Core Criteria – was adopted by SSIP when the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) came into force.

SSIP member health and safety assessment schemes must incorporate the core criteria standard into their assessment of contractor organisational capability.

Core SSIP topics covered
Contractor Accreditation

SafeContractor Assessment

SafeContractor assessment includes category-related activities that provide more information about the risks associated with your work.

So, depending on the work activities you select, you may need to provide additional evidence to supplement your original assessment.

The SafeContractor assessment includes details of your insurance cover too, so clients can see your level of cover and when it expires. This is always a requirement.

Contractor Accreditation

What happens when accreditation expires?

Your SafeContractor accreditation will be issued for a year, but it will be suspended when your original SSIP member accreditation expires.

If this happens, you will need to either renew your original SSIP member accreditation, or complete the full SafeContractor assessment to remain accredited with SafeContractor.

Your SafeContractor accreditation will appear on our client portals, but not on the SSIP portal; only your original accreditation will be listed there. This ensures that only your original full assessment is recognised by other schemes.
