24th May

Small businesses sacrifice £253 per day when closing on any bank holiday. If you’re planning on using the bank holiday to catch up on offsite tasks, then it’s worth spending a few hours ensuring that your health and safety paperwork is compliant.

According to data from Paymentsense, both May bank holiday weekends are expected to bring in a total revenue of £118m. This figure is based on the increase in sales volumes in 2018, with the Early May Bank Holiday being up by 6% and the late one up by a further 5%.

Previous research has shown how much a small business sacrifices by closing on a bank holiday. Yell Business previously conducted a study of 1,500 UK small business owners, which revealed that closing on any bank holiday costs an average of £253 per day. However, many businesses will still choose to shut up shop on bank holidays to take a well-deserved break.

The Early May Bank Holiday has been and gone, but if you are thinking of closing on Monday 27 May, here’s how you can make better use of your time leading up to and on the bank holiday.

Update your holiday hours

Before you turn on your Out of Office message, make sure you update your website and social media channels with your holiday opening hours to keep your customers up to date. It’s important that your customers know your availability to reduce frustration. Failure to update your holiday hours could result in losing customers’ trust and, consequently, them taking their business elsewhere.

Get to grips with your paperwork

Spend a few hours of your extra holiday day ensuring that your health and safety paperwork is compliant.
While it’s not the most exciting task to do while you’re offsite, it’s a means to an end; organisations won’t choose you to be their contractor if you’re unable to provide the relevant documentation that demonstrates you’re safe to work with. Of course, when you’ve actively made the decision to close for the day, you’re unlikely to want to deal with the burden of paperwork. That’s where we come in.
